What To Do If Xiangyunsha (Gambiered Guangdong Silk) Becomes Stiff After Washing?

You can restore the softness of Xiangyunsha after washing through proper cleaning techniques, natural softening, and steam ironing.

Proper initial cleaning: Before washing new Xiangyunsha for the first time, soak it briefly (10–15 minutes) in cold water (below 30°C) or warm water (not exceeding 40°C) with a small amount of table salt or tea water to set the color. Then, add a neutral, phosphorus-free detergent specifically designed for silk to the water. Turn the garment inside out and wash it using a gentle "lifting and swishing" motion or by pressing lightly; use a soft-bristled brush for localized stains, but avoid vigorous rubbing or wringing. During the final rinse, soak the garment for 5 minutes in a mixture of white vinegar and water (diluted at a 1:50 ratio) to neutralize any alkaline residue. After washing, lay the garment flat on a dry towel, roll the towel up, and press gently to absorb excess moisture; do not wring it out directly or expose it to direct sunlight.

Proper hand washing: For routine cleaning, keep the water temperature below 30°C; never use hot water. Use a neutral detergent specifically for silk, or a diluted mild shampoo or body wash; avoid alkaline products like laundry powder or bar soap. After immersing the garment, rinse gently and pat to remove dirt. Keep the entire process under 2 minutes to avoid prolonged soaking. After washing, wrap the garment in a large towel and press gently to absorb water; do not wring, as this can break the fibers and cause stiffness.

Natural softening: Xiangyunsha has the characteristic of becoming softer the more it is worn. After 1–2 months of continuous wear, trace amounts of body oils, sweat, and body heat interact slowly with the fabric's microporous structure, gradually making it softer and giving it a lustrous, oily sheen. When there are no obvious stains, simply hang the garment in a well-ventilated area for 1–2 days after wearing to air it out. Follow the principle of "wash less, wear more" to minimize damage to the yam-tuber coating caused by washing.

Steam ironing: You can gently steam the fabric using a steam iron or a garment steamer before or after wearing it, or when storing it for the season. Set the temperature to the "Silk" setting or 110°C–120°C, and steam the fabric from a distance of 20 cm to avoid direct contact with the hot soleplate. Alternatively, hang the garment in the bathroom while showering (keeping it away from water droplets) to let the steam treat the fabric for 15–20 minutes, then hang it up to dry. The steam softens the fibers and restores the fabric's suppleness.
