Major Varieties of Silk Fabrics

"Guican No. 8" is a robust, high-yielding, and high-quality four-way hybrid mulberry silkworm variety (designed for summer and autumn rearing) developed by the Sericulture Technology Extension Station of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Breeding began in 2010, and the variety was finalized in 2018. It exhibits a 1,000-fold increase in resistance to infectious flacherie (blood-type polyhedrosis) compared to conventional varieties, with a 5%–10% increase in cocoon yield per rearing sheet. In 2025, it was designated a "leading agricultural variety" by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs; it has seen cumulative adoption exceeding 6 million rearing sheets, resulting in a total cocoon output of over 200,000 tons.
The "Qiuhua × Ping 30" mulberry silkworm variety is characterized by strong vitality and excellent cocoon silk quality. Its silk yield is 20% higher than that of conventional varieties, with a reelability filament length of 716 meters and a cleanliness score of 94.81 points; the raw silk meets the highest grade (6A) under silk quality classification standards. Since its introduction, the variety's 6A-grade raw silk has been used to produce fabrics for garments and silk gifts for major events such as APEC and the G20 summits. It has been promoted since 2012, with a cumulative adoption of 1.5 million rearing sheets.
"Colorful Tussah" silkworms possess colorful bodies but spin milky-white silk. While they hold significant value for ornamental purposes and science education-making them suitable for developing eco-agricultural tourism-they are not appropriate for large-scale commercial promotion.
