Key methods for preserving Xiangyunsha fabric include the following:
Cleaning before storage: Before storing, Xiangyunsha should be washed gently by hand using lukewarm water (below 30°C) and a neutral detergent (such as one formulated for silk and wool). Avoid machine washing or vigorous rubbing to prevent fiber damage. After washing, lay the fabric flat in a cool, well-ventilated area to air dry; avoid direct sunlight, as ultraviolet rays can cause the fabric to become brittle.
Choosing the storage environment: The ideal storage environment for Xiangyunsha is a temperature of 20–25°C and a humidity level of 50%–60% to prevent mold caused by dampness or fiber cracking caused by excessive dryness. Store the fabric away from light and dust; breathable cotton storage bags or drawers are recommended. Avoid direct contact with sealed plastic bags, which can trap odors.
Folding and hanging techniques: Xiangyunsha can be folded in half along the grain and then rolled into a cylinder for storage to minimize crease pressure. If hanging the garment, use a wide-shouldered hanger padded with a soft cloth to prevent shoulder deformation. Additionally, avoid storing it alongside metal accessories or rough-textured clothing to prevent snagging or pilling. Another suitable preservation method is vertical hanging with adequate air circulation, ensuring the fabric is neither folded nor sealed.
Extra protection for long-term storage: For long-term storage, you can place natural camphor wood strips or lavender sachets (at least 10 cm away from the fabric) to repel insects; however, avoid chemical insect repellents, as they may damage the silk. Furthermore, periodically inspect the stored fabric-removing it every three months to air it out and check for signs of mold or insect damage-and address any issues promptly.
